Since it was pretty out this afternoon I decided to adjust the valves, change the oil, put the electric water pump drive back on, & put the slicks on to hopefully hit a test & tune night in the next couple weeks. Found a small sliver of bearing material on the magnetic plug in the oil pan (not good), headed around front to remove the crank & water pump pulleys to put the water pump drive back on, found way excessive crank end play & that I can move the crank by hand easily.

Don't know much at this point but I've definitely lost a thrust bearing, still had excellent oil pressure so hopefully I caught it before anything catastrophic happened. My engine guru suspects the converter is ballooning and pushing the crank forward.

Freakin' lovely.

Scott

Good luck Scott. Maybe it won't be too bad once you are in there.

not good, but better to find out this way than to have it blow up.

Finally got a free weekend to pull the engine out of the El Camino and see what was damaged.

Just as suspected the rear side of the thrust bearing is worn paper thin but luckily did not go thru the block or cap:

The corresponding wear surface on the Callies crank is also worn thin and cracked:
